STONE SHEEP

Scoop Lake is home to some of the largest populations of Stone's Sheep in the province of British Columbia. Stone's Sheep are primarily found in Northern B.C. Our exclusive guide area encompasses 2,560,000 acres in the Cassiar Mountain Range. This is the area that Jack O'Connor hunted and last wrote about. This guide area has produced many record-book rams in past years. Stone's Sheep can be very elusive; they will blend into the terrain making them difficult to spot. They will find spots to hide where it is difficult to climb, or simply disappear into the brush. These elusive and majestic animals, once viewed in their natural habitat, get the adrenalin pumping.

All Stone's Sheep are on a quota. Scoop Lake Outfitters has successfully harvested 87% of its quota over the past ten years. With average horns of 37" with bases of 14 1/2". Our sheep have true Stone's Sheep colorings and you will find that our capes are quite dark. Even so, you will find a variety of color tones. 50% of our rams are broomed off, this is typical of older rams. Our policy is to harvest only rams over 8 1/2 years in age. This can be frustrating for the guide and hunter, especially when viewing a nice ram that's only six or seven years old, however, the end result is larger rams for our clients and a healthier breeding population. On a typical hunt a client can expect to see Sheep every day.

Our Sheep hunts consist of one guide and one hunter and are usually assisted by a wrangler and/or a cook. Our Sheep are spread throughout our entire guide area. We have 21 different camps with cabin facilities, which we use for hunting all species. Our Sheep hunts begin from one of these cabin equipped spike camps. If a client is not successful in the early portion of the hunt, however, it may become necessary to take a tent and spike camp out further from the cabin camp.

Our guides are some of the best. Sheep hunting for the hunter and the guide becomes a passion. Our season for Sheep hunting starts August 1st and ends October 15th. Our first hunt of August is for Sheep and Wolf. The second hunt can be for Sheep, Moose, Goat,Caribou, Black Bear and Wolf. During our September hunts all species are open, including Grizzly Bear.

MOUNTAIN GOAT

These majestic white animals are always thought of as being up on the pinnacles of the highest mountain tops. Well do we have a surprise for you!! Scoop Lake Outfitters' 2,560,000 acres of exclusive guide area is home to one of the largest goat populations in British Columbia. Most of our hunts are by horse back, from well-equipped and warm, comfortable cabins. You will spend a large portion of your time riding and glassing, and trying to get above your goat. However, this is not to say you don't need to be in shape. As always, there is some climbing involved, but no ropes or pinions. Our average client is about 55 years in age and we've had a 95 percent success rate. We have lots of goats.

Mountain Goats are a very beautiful animal. Most of our clients mount them life size. One of the most important aspects of harvesting a goat is that it needs to have good hair. At Scoop Lake, we hunt from August 25th to October 15th due to the fact that in our geographic location, Northern BC, our goats have excellent hair during this time of the year. Our goats average 9-9 1/2 inches. You can combine a Mountain Goat hunt with Moose, Caribou, Elk, Grizzly, Black Bear andWolf. Our most common combination hunt is Goat and Moose or Goat & Caribou. We hunt our Moose and Caribou in similar terrain around the 4500 to 5000' elevation.

At Scoop Lake, we prefer to harvest only Billy Goats even though the regulations say you can harvest Nannies or Billie's. Due to our self imposed Billy Goat only harvest, we have one of the largest goat populations in northern British Columbia. It is not unusual to see as many as 30 goats in a single day. Goats can be a fun animal for archers to hunt, also, as you will see many goats and they generally give you a lot of opportunities on stalks. We have enjoyed a very high success rate with archers.

When inquiring, ask about our 'two on one' goat hunts. These are fun hunts and your opportunities for success are always very good. Remember, you don't have to climb any 10,000-foot mountains to be successful when hunting with Scoop Lake. We have great success because we have great guides, lots of goats and good accessibility to the goats.

CANADIAN MOOSE

The Largest Canadian Moose are found in Northern British Columbia. Geographically speaking, the further north you go, the larger they get. Once you cross the Yukon border, they are Alaska Yukon Moose. Scoop Lake Outfitters' exclusive guide area is 2,560,000 acres, located 90 air miles from the Yukon border and 80 air miles from the nearest town or road. With how remote, we are and the strict game management policies we employ, we are able to produce some of the best trophies available in the Canadian North West.

Scoop Lake is a well-established hunting and fishing area that has consistently produced many record book moose. On average, we harvest one moose for every 100,000 acres. Consistently 25-30% of our moose are Boone and Crocket. Over 90% make the SCI book. Our moose average 50"+.

Though it's not so much the width of their antlers as it is the palms that make a moose look massive and score well. As you will notice from the pictures here on our site, our moose have very good palms. All moose hunters hunt from warm, comfortable cabins with all the amenities. Sorry, no TV. Most of our hunts are on horse back in the mountains. We also have moose hunts from lakes where we use boats; this is more for the client who is looking for an easier hunt, or would prefer not to use a horse.

We also offer riverboat hunts. These hunts are without the aid of horses, and are ideal for boating enthusiasts and clients in fairly good shape, as you may be required to do some hiking, in the event you spot a moose some distance from the river. All these hunts are from comfortable cabins.

Canadian Moose can be hunted in combination with sheep, goat, caribou, black bear, grizzly bear or wolf. Our most popular combination is moose and goat. Over the past 20 years, Scoop Lake has enjoyed a 90% success rate on moose and/or goat for rifle hunters. We do cater to archery clients; however, our success rate has been significantly less, due to the fact that the archers' success is relative to their ability.

For a first class, fair chase, Canadian Moose hunt, give us a call. You won't be disappointed.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK

During the winter of 1984 and 1985 we transplanted 150 elk into our Scoop Lake guide area. The transplant involved catching 75 elk in southeastern British Columbia the winter of 1984 and trucking them 1200 miles to Fort Nelson, then flying them 240 miles into Scoop Lake. The following winter of 1985 the same procedure, 75 elk were caught in Elk Island Park, trucked and flown to Scoop Lake. We now have a flourishing herd of elk.

In 1989 we had our first elk hunt, and since then we have been having a modest harvest of 2- 4 elk each season. We have opted to harvest quality bulls verse quantity. Since 1989 we have harvested bulls in the 390 class with our average elk scoring 330-340 Boone and Crocket. Our season is September 1st-10th. Starting in 2008 the government opened elk hunting in a new area within our guide area that has never been hunted for elk. This area supports the majority of the elk population. In 2008 we chased after a couple bulls in excess of 375 B&C. One hunter who did not pull the trigger on a bull passed up 22 bulls scoring over 320 B&C. You will not find any other area that produces as many good quality free range elk in BC.

Our hunts are on foot, hiking from the cabin early in the morning. You are hunting the minute you leave the cabin, the guides bugle the elk, and you generally find yourself in close proximity to your bull before you see him. Imagine a 350 class bull ripping the brush apart and bugling in your face, cows scattered around, the hair standing up on your neck and your trying to get your sights on this monster. Hunters need to be in fairly good shape as we do quite a bit of hiking. We enjoy a very high success on very good quality elk, 90 percent of our elk score over 325 Boone and Crocket.

BLACK BEAR & GRIZZLY BEAR

Black Bear populations are average and most hunting occurs while hunting for other big game. True Mountain Grizzly Bears reside in Northern British Colombia, and Scoop Lake has an excellent population of silver tips. Hunting is very limited with the chance to harvest a 7 foot plus Bear being very high.

MOUNTAIN CARIBOU
Mountain Cribou are found frequently in the high mountain areas, and we harvest trophy bulls every season. Caribou are best hunted as an opportunity animal as an add on with Goat, Moose or Sheep. However we do book Caribou hunts and we do produce some 400 class bulls.
